Pat Buchanan’s new piece in the American Conservative goes over some recent survey results from the Arab world. It turns out that I was absolutely right ; ) when I laughingly condemed Bush’s scare tactic of bringing up a gigantic Islamo-Fascist Caliphate to rule the world from Spain to Indonesia and beyond as the likely result of an American exit from Iraq.

Pat Buchanan is probably just playing the time honoured political game of fence sitting. He’s trying to stay credible and influential within the GOP (hence the pro-Bush stuff) …even though he knows, and can elucidate quite clearly why Bush’s policies are wrong.
There may be some weird presidentialism at work too, Buchanan wants to play ‘hail to the chief’ whilst dissing the evil neocon court advisers. Of course all good presidentialists know what Truman said, “the buck stops here”, so why not blame the advisee rather than just the advisor? Reagan didn’t always follow his neocon hawk advisors, and the result was the end of the cold war.
Unfortunately for Pat, when you sit on fences you get splinters. He is likely to lose his credibility with everyone. And that’s a shame.
