Before signing off his webpage on MySpace.com Monday, Army Pvt. Dylan Meyer typed a farewell note to the world."Jesus, I don’t know if any of you have heard what has happened to me yet, but I just want to remind you not to be sad. Laugh, that’s what lifes about," Meyer wrote. "When it is all said and done, and all the b——t is cleared away, it is the ones you love who you will remember."
The next morning, Meyer was found dead in the Army barracks at Fort Gordon in Georgia. He was 20. …
On April 21, Meyer made one last movie that he added to his MySpace Site, a short film about Army life he called "Bored As Hell: A Weekend at Ft. Gordon."
The movie shows soldiers listening to music, drinking Jack Daniels out of the bottle and playing hacky-sack. It ends with two messages of white script on a black screen.
The first reads: "Dedicated to America’s Youth. Go to college and lead a normal life. Don’t make the same mistake I did."
The second says: "And F—— Vote! Don’t let old people run your lives, you have a choice."
The fact that I can even hear myself think over the non-existent cries of mercy from the people of my city and this country who supported and encouraged this war makes me sick.
I remember painting a house in January 2003 and the owner struck up a conversation about the UN. Great! Screw painting, let’s talk about UN hating!
"Yeah, they just aren’t very pro-active theses days are they?" he said.
"Uh… I always hated them for doing stuff," I answered.
"Huh?" he said.
I decided to try and split the difference, "Well, I’m glad you hate the UN."
I wonder if that idiot even remembers that he supported this disaster.
It sounds like this kid knew better and went anyway, for what reason we can’t say, but it seems to me that as much of the responsibility lies with those who sent him and those who cheered them on.
i opposed the iraq war from the start. but not too vocally, and not vociferously.
the most ringing endoresment i ever publically made was to the effect of “well, if the government says that the iraqis have weapons of mass destruction and the will to use them, and that a clear and present danger exists to the USA that is not publicized by the press…if they are privy to secret intelligence that corroborates this notion–information that I lack–and that it has not been declassified–and that if they declassify there will be huge loss of american life–i suppose i will for once hold my tongue (after all, what does my single voice matter) and pray for a swift and quick fight and that the troops will be home in a month or two when all is said and done…”
