I believe Bob B has stated that if you buck the system here in the good ‘ol USA and you persist at it, they will eventually kill you. The referenced article is a good example. Having been jailed in the past for numerous mini-protests, I can verify that this is true. There is a piece over at antiwar by Stephen Zunes that says: “Freedom will some day come to Iran”. Yup, just like the Kuhn’s are “free” to protest the state of the state here in our bastion of “freedom”… Zunes is so far out of touch that it is comical.
I believe that Iran has one of the youngest average populations in the world. Much of the yoputh is pro - Western. This threatening to nuke em does nothing but strengthen the intolerant elements in Iran by establishing that the US isn’t anti - terrorist but anti - Muslim.
The promise of Iran is the youth and dialogue with the west. Not the respective leadership in both countries.

That is just disgusting. Not only the behavior of the “peace officer”, but the National Guard dickhead too. He would have fit right in with the Waffen SS, I think.
I’m from the area where this happened, and it got a good bit of media attention. As things stand now, all charges against the Kuhns have been dropped and an “internal investigation” (aka, not really doing anything and hoping everybody forgets this ever happened) is on-going. The Kuhns got their flag back and are still hopeful that some kind of disciplinary action is taken against the deputy — fat chance if you ask me.
There’s lots more to the story, though. Deputy “Scumbag” Scarborough is a member of the National Guard and just got back from Iraq where breaking down doors and assaulting innocent civilians is standard operating procedure. The “desecration” complaint also originated from a former Sheriff’s Deputy and now National Guardsman, Staff Sergeant Mark Radford. According to witness accounts, this was the guy in fatigues that confronted Kuhns after the complaint to the Asheville Police Dept. didn’t result in the arrest he hoped for, and he’s the guy that skulked around taking pictures of the Kuhn’s house. Radford is also the one who yelled “go to jail, baby” as the Kuhns were being taken into custody, so he was hanging around watching and getting a hard-on while all this was going down.
So here’s the sequence of events: When nothing happened as a result of the complaint to the APD, and the Kuhns weren’t intimidated by the face-to-face confrontation with Radford himself, Radford then went to his fellow National Guardsman Scarborough and had him break his department’s protocol (which calls for all non-emergency complaints inside city limits to be forwarded to the city’s law enforcement agency) and provoke a confrontation with the Kuhns.
I’ve talked directly to the Sheriff and gave him my two cents worth about this incident (if anyone else would like to do the same, his name is Van Duncan, and his number is 828-250-4503). I’ve also written a letter to the editor of the local paper along with lots of other people (many, but not most of which, took the Deputy’s side in this, sadly enough). I also emailed the Adjutant General of the North Carolina National Guard, Major General William E. Ingram, Jr. (william.ingram2@us.army.mil), as well as their Office of Public Affairs (pao@nc.ngb.army.mil) letting them know what some of their men were up to and how disgusted I was by it. I haven’t heard anything back, and don’t expect to (except maybe a visit from these thugs in the dark of night).
There’s lots more I could add (really bone-headed statements by the Sheriff and his spokesman, not to mention Mark Radford himself), but I think I’ve written enough for now, except for a closing comment: Don’t believe for a minute that the military exists to protect your freedoms. Way too many of these guys are fascist thugs who, given the order, would be more than willing to put a bullet between the eyes of anybody that doesn’t worship the flag like they do. Like the Operative in Serenity, these guys are true believers, and they truly hate your freedoms.

The Sheriff protected his underling (as expected), but got caught in two lies in the process. However, he does admit that Deputy (Scumbag) Scarborough “acted wrongly.”
