  2. “Befriend the Shias” says Gene Lyons: FINALLY!!!! Somebody gets that thing right! I was despairing of ever hearing that seemingly self-evident fact that the Shias would be a natural ally to the USA in the war against Wahabi Islam (Al-Qaeda & Co.)

  4. …As you know VS, Iran is an Shia Islamic State, and The US has long since played that very same “Befriend the Shia” card in Iraq…Both Politically and Militarily—And seemingly to no great avail.

  5. The US has *never* tried to befriend the Shia in any way, shape or form. The US *caved in* to a *demand* by Ayatollah Sistani to have direct elections in Iraq because they knew darn well that if they reneged on the promise to give democratic elections to the Iraqi people the Shia would rise up and Iraq would turn into a bloodbath. The US has never accepted to deal with Iran or Hezbollah even though both of them were more than willing to talk. And the US is covering the Saudi repression against the Shia in Saudi Arabia.

I believe this is actually ROLLINS calling for NET NEUTRALITY while concurrently saying he is against GOVERNMENT REGULATION of the internet……This is intellectuality inconsistent……..What he wants here is a REGULATION that would prohibit ISP’s from directing WEB traffic to selected sites (presumambly) based upon payment

Maybe NET NEUTRALITY is a Good thing. Maybe it is a Bad Thing.

But you can’t credibly say that your against Government Regulation while concurrently calling for same.

    Please review and advise.

  7. well, maybe, just maybe, things are not always sobinary, so totally “black or white”. consider the US Constitution – is it not a form of REGULATION? Maybe, just maybe, some regulations can be useful. Truly a revolutionary idea in some circles I suppose…

  9. I’m not taking sides on the NET NEUTRALITY thing….I’m just pointing out that Rollins is saying that he doesn’t want government regulating the Internet while proposing a law (governmentr regulation, no?) prohibiting ISP from giving preferntial treatment for (large….ie Paying) customers…..View his clip that Purcell posted…..Tease it out…..Is my analysis wrong?

  10. Well lets remember when ever the Bushies name an initiative the true purpose is almost always exactly opposite of the name. The global war on terrorism has been a global war to create fear. The patriot act subverted the constitution. the healthy forest act gave money to timber corporation so they could cut down more trees on the public lands. The no child left behind act left all our children waiting on the dumbest ones to catch up. And the net neutrality act is really about eliminating neutrality.
What Henry Rollins wants is for the government not to change the rules for the Internet. Period.

Here is the best explanation of the Net Neutrality act al la Jon Stewart’s Daily Show

  11. Actually NET NEUTRALITY would preserve neutrality…albeit through government intervention….Most Anti – Net Neutrality Libertarians want the SAME outcome via Consumers REJECTING ISP which try redirecting traffic to favored sites.

I think (if it happened in a vacuum) the NET NEUTRALITY act is good. My fear is that this will be a “toe hold” where the Government encroaches incrementally more and more into Net Regulation.

  12. “ Actually NET NEUTRALITY would preserve neutrality…albeit through government intervention”

    I stand corrected

    http://www.aclu.org/freespeech/internet/26829res20060922.html

When I was young the nice little Suburban town of Palatine IL. decided to jack up the water rates but not for everyone, one water rate for the Village proper and a separate rate twenty times higher for the unincorporated area. One guy painted on his garage door “I need to sell my house to pay my water bill” the courts struck down the two tier rate structure but that was in the 70’s

There is such a thing as natural monopolies, Utilities are natural monopolies, would it be cost effective to run ten sets of pipes under the streets so you had a real choices on whom you bought your water from? I guess you can always drill a well. But then you need electricity to run the well.

If we have monopolies we need to regulate them or they will become tyrants beholden to no one.

  13. I don’t have much of a beef with NET NEUTRALITY, especially since the Internet was heavily subsidized by the government from the get go…….however, I think if you can an inch (even in a good cause) they’ll come back for a foot, a yard, etc…..

And as a matter of fact you can’t say I’m for NET NEUTRALITY and I don’t believe in government regulation of the internet – at least no wothout some elaboration and qualification.

Henry Rollin’s rant didn’t strike me as particularly nuanced.

BTW, did you see how Henry “chilled the fuck out” with Zionist KISS frontman Gene Simmons….Why didn’y Henry step up and interrogate Mr. Simmons on his aggressive warmongering? Simmons is also rabid for copyright protection….Isn’t Rollins supposed to be Mr. anti – corporate?????? Hmmm?

    Posted by SteveC | October 10, 2007, 4:56 pm
  14. No I missed that one. Gene Simons is a Zionist tool? Really? I never knew he was political.

  15. I was wondering how the old, fat, ugly, boring, over the hill Simmons got a contemporary TV show. Mystery solved. I figured as much.
