  2. Scott:

Doesn’t the fact that your refering to the term NIGGER as “THE N WORD” only give credence and legitimacy to the PC thought police that you purport to be criticizing here…..The fact that this may be unconscious on your part only shows how deep the conditioning is.

  9. On waterboarding…Giraldi is slightly inaccurate. It does not require immersion in water and is designed to simulate drowning rather than cause it. It is considered effective because it is known to break resistance in a matter of seconds. Getting ‘dunked’ is quite quaint in comparison- used, as it has been, by generations of on screen cops on recalcitrant criminals (usually head down a toilet bowl). As for IRA prisoners, the horrors they visited on themselves (hunger strikes, dirty protests) exceeded anything the British ever subjected them to. Of course, a ‘renditioned’ prisoner held in a secret prison cannot engage in such public protest since no one will know where they are or, indeed, who they are. Clever that.

  10. So, you’re saying the cloth and poured water is more “effective” than dunking them – like in the Mel Gibson movie Conspiracy Theory?

    Posted by Scott | November 2, 2007, 9:56 am
  11. Alas, I haven’t seen Conspiracy Theory. Well water boarding is considered effective in that it makes people talk. What they say after that – well, hey, who cares? They’re talking aren’t they? Such was the case with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed- they couldn’t stop him confessing it seems. The British experience of forced interrogation produced many unsafe convictions (as in the case of the Guildford and Birmingham IRA bombings) and it has been known since at least the Middle Ages that torture often produces false confessions ( Spanish Inquisition anyone?). That’s all old ground though, I guess. The other point is that ‘dunking’ is considered torture by the US State Department while the, ahem, similar practice of water boarding is not. Such are the subtleties of the the War on Terror. And on an unrelated point you really should check out Sheihk Khalid bin Mahfouz’ attempts to subvert the First Amendment using foreign libel laws- if you havn’t already that is.
