One last thing before I go…to William Lind’s piece and his quoting of Sun Tzu:

    Sun Tzu also said about:
    Laying Plans:

“The art of war is of vital importance to the State”

    and that

“All warfare is based on deception.”

    While he says on the
    Waging of War

“When you engage in actual fighting, if victory
is long in coming, then men’s weapons will grow dull and
their ardor will be damped. If you lay siege to a town,
    you will exhaust your strength.”

    and

“Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources.
of the State will not be equal to the strain.

There is no instance of a country having benefited
    from prolonged warfare.”

In war, then, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns.

Glad to hear the critique of Naomi Klein ’cause she’s been bugging me a lot lately too. She’s the perfect example of the confused lefty. I just started reading Mises’ “The anti-capitalist mentality,” which I hope sheds some like on why left intellectuals loathe the concept of free markets (full disclosure here: I used to be one of those lefties so I’ve got no ax to grind; just trying to understand my own self as well).

BTW, you can download the Mises book and others for free at the Library of Liberty here:

I should add: Klein is not just confused, she’s making the bucks catering to the huge market out there of confused lefties. It’s a large chunk of change, I’m sure.

Well, let’s not confuse NK with Bernie Goldberg or Al Franken. She’s doing real investigative work and wrestling with serious geo-political issues. We may want to tweak her take-home point and make it better, but she should be taken seriously by anyone interested in this stuff. I doubt she rakes in big-entertainer/newsmedia money.

Strangely i always thought that the imperial star destroyers were much better looking than the ships of the republic ;)

and yes condi is frightning. :(

Fair enough, Tom. But I do think there is a financial incentive for her NOT to connect the dots. Otherwise she might have to live in Scott’s tax bracket (in Canada, of course)!

I think interviewing her will be fun. She seems nice enough. Explaining capitalism through her own book deal will be a hoot.

    Yeah, do it!!!

I don’t think you give Klein and Palast enough credit for how well they really do get Milton Friedman and co. You as a person, Scott, seem to have alot more in common with those guys(K and P) than you do with freemarket monsters like L. Paul Brehmer and Cheney(Or milton or thomas friedman for that matter).

I asked you to interview Naomi about 2 months ago and it exploded into this blowout. She is a nice person, I hope you do it. The point is to educate not bully right?

That’s what I was trying to tell you: That free marketeers have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with a bunch of fascists. And you still can’t resist calling Bremer and Cheney “free market.” Give me a fucking break.

More on NK: A lot of the confusion, I think, arises from the Republican Party, who label THEMSELVES free-marketeers. They call what they do with military contractors “privatizing the military,” but of course it’s got absolutely nothing to do with markets in any way. It’s just taking a bunch of our money and dumping it by the hundreds and hundreds of billions into the pockets of opulent fatheads who then turn around and act all proud of themselves because they operate a “private enterprise.”

Then when these disgusting welfare pigs want to get serious about profligate spending, they veto SCHIP, and all the stupid assholes under their sway swoon like smitten schoolgirls over the wonderful good that is Bush’s small-government agenda.

So small wonder people like Klein reject this “privatization.” The next step is to call it what it really is: Communism once removed.

Hey, Scott, feel my pain too, friend: In about one hour I’ll be stenciling Ron Paul signs with a bunch of 911 kooks. Talk about a tongue-biting challenge. Sheesh.

  15. MikeL posted the following on November 2, 2007 at 5:44 pm.

    Tom,
Naomi Klein is right to point out the frauds of “privatization” as we know it, but what’s her solution? To empower government even more? If so, that doesn’t make any sense.

Heh. You’re a better man than me dude. I’d be arguing and ridiculing from the moment I walked in the room.

    what’s her solution?

MikeL: I suppose we’d have to look at her book to know.

Good luck with those sign-makers. Suffering 911 kooks for the greater good–you’re a saint.
