And all that money spent on the military doesn’t even keep us safe. Look at this story. A Russian bomber comes within 2000 feet of a US carrier. This is not too long after a Chinese sub surfaced among a carrier strike group, proof that the armed services of the US cannot defend themselves against even the most modestly advanced force. No, we build carrier groups in order to attack Iraqi kids with AKs and RPGs. Don’t you all feel safe?
And what 20th century armed force couldn’t defend itself against our cute, cuddly Predator drone? These things fly low, slow, and loud. Any force with shoulder-fired missile circa 1978 could take these things down. This stuff is made to kill weaklings, little kids hiding in the shadows with a grenade. This the real US military machine.

You guest is confusing modernization with effectiveness. The case of the Chinese sub shows that a force does not have to be able to play a high-stakes chess game with its opponents. They can do plenty of damage just playing checkers.
