Posted by MikeL | May 14, 2008, 11:53 amCheck out this article at the New Yorker about what must be the most enduring anarchist society on the planet. The author, Jared Diamond, doesn’t spin it that way, but the Papua New Guinea highlanders indeed live in what can only be described as clan-centered anarchy. Diamond goes on to talk about the origins of the state; only some of his arguments make sense to me but nevermind. The really sobering fact about the highlanders is how incredibly violent they are. Feuds span decades and generations. Some highlanders appear to be thankful that the emergence of a PNG political state has freed them from endless conflict and murder. Not the perfect model for an anarchist society, to say the least. Worth the read.
Yep….. I think Spencer Tracy played Darrow in the movie. I don’t know who played Bryan….

After eight days of trial, it took the jury only nine minutes to deliberate. Scopes was found guilty on July 21 and ordered to pay a US$100.00 fine (approximately $1,165 when adjusted for inflation).

Posted by Anders | May 14, 2008, 12:55 pmFunny thought……
I just flipped to Alex Jones and either a guest or caller said he thought Obama was a “closet Muslim” and would “come out” at his Inaugeration by swearing the oath of office on a KORAN.
I just had a mental picture of this…. FOX NEWS covering the swearing on of Obama….and then (say Shepard Smith) announcing “matter of factly” that just prior to taking the oath, he has Requested that the Oath by done with his hand on a KORAN….Maybe an XCU of Obama w/ a Big Shit Eating Grin on his face as he’s sworn in….
Just try to get the visual in your mind….an not piss yourself.

I loved the characterization of conservatives today - actually use these points about conservatives in conservative chats and I get death threats.
“There is no force in the world that could ever bring America down — but an empire of our own creation.”
- Scott Horton
