Alrighty, I don’t know if I’m buying ol’ Pat’s theory of “If we just gave Hitler the Sudentenland we would never had WWII.” I’m an advocate of the Austrian School of Economics and the great Ludwig von Mises. If you want to know the real reasons we had a Second World War I suggest Mises’ Omnipotent Government: The Rise of The Total State & Total War .

Hagee is a false prophet who will be dealt with by God on his terms in his time. Read the story of Balaam in the Old Testament and the what fate awaits false prophets in the New Testament. If I were him, I would be very very afraid.

Unfortunately, nearly everyone regards WWII is the good war — even though, in terms of the number killed and destruction done, it was by far the worst. If even peaceniks think the biggest war ever was a necessary one, we will never have lasting peace.
The victors of WWII were the American global empire/military-industrial complex and expansive Stalinism. What emerged were more power and legitimacy for the world’s all-time worst butcher (during peacetime, in particular, Stalin was far more murderous than Hitler) and the worst precedents for US global dominance and strategic terror bombing. Yet people still defend the killing of millions of people in that war, on the basis that millions others were killed by the war, too. What madness.

One of the problems is that anyone who even suggests World War II was anything but good triumphing over evil is, if their lucky, portrayed as a French-like, limp-wristed, weak-kneed appeaser who would try to negotiate Satan himself. More likely, they’ll be lambasted as a Nazi whose main complaint about the war is that we didn’t side with the great Hitler who was getting rid of those meddling Jews, commies and other undesirables. I know that many of the so-called peaceniks who love WWII take to heart intervention as an essentially sound policy that others “mishandle”, but this tenet that WWII was good versus pure evil is embedded in the minds of all Americans and will continue to serve as a barrier to actual peace.

They love the war, but it was during the war that millions of Jews were murdered. They seem to want to rewrite history and pretend the war saved six million Jews, instead of slaughtering them. And of course if the Allies cared about the Jews they would have, at a minimum, not turned them away at their shores and borders.
Saying the Holocaust was an excuse for WWII is like saying the horrors going on in Iraq are an excuse for that war.

Actually Angela, I’m curious about what YOU might have to say about Pat Buchanan. Seems to me like he might be the kind of fellow who might rub you the wrong way.

I shouldn’t have said “all” Americans before, I meant the majority. It’s quite clear that allies did little, if anything, to even slow down the Holocaust and did a great deal to speed it along.

This is a good example of the thinking of the pro-WWII people, particularly the comments, and what I was getting at about people against “appeasing” Hitler (not to endorse Matt Yglesias, just to provide an example).

Reply to TC BellGreat interview, Scott. Pat’s thesis is hard to swallow but it’s worth thinking about.
