I don’t know if I’d assume Lewis is lying here, since Bernanke is the source implying he is. I assume Bernanke did force him to acquire Merrill Lynch. As much as I don’t like the CEO of BofA, I don’t think his memory of what happened is less credible than the government’s.
I tend to believe that when someone says “i do not recall” it usually means they know exactly when the questioner is referring to, but thats probably from hearing Bush officials use it as a defence on the rare occasions they’ve had to be questioned.
